Auto Insurance · Grand Coteau, Louisiana
Auto insurance for the way Louisiana drives.
Louisiana's 15/30/25 minimum is not a plan. Liability, uninsured motorist, collision and the rideshare use a personal policy quietly excludes.
Louisiana’s statutory minimum liability limit is 15/30/25. It is the legal floor for keeping a plate on the car, and it is not a plan. Almost everything worth deciding about a Louisiana auto policy happens above that line.
What Goes on an Auto Policy
An auto policy is a stack of separate coverages that happen to share a declarations page. Each one answers a different question, and the cheap ones are usually the ones that matter most.
Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability
What pays the other party when an accident is your fault. The state minimum is $15,000 per person, $30,000 per accident and $25,000 of property damage, written 15/30/25.
What it looks like: one overnight hospital admission with imaging clears $15,000 comfortably, and $25,000 no longer replaces a late-model truck. Above the minimum, additional liability is one of the cheapest things on the policy per dollar of protection, because the first dollars of coverage are the expensive ones.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist
Pays for your injuries when the driver who hit you has no insurance, or has 15/30/25 against a claim worth far more. Louisiana has consistently ranked among the states with the highest share of uninsured drivers.
Rejecting UM requires a signed form, and a great many Louisiana drivers have signed one without registering what it was. It is the coverage we check first on every policy review, and putting it back usually costs less than people brace for.
Collision
Repairs or replaces your own vehicle after an impact, whoever was at fault. Carries its own deductible, and some carriers offer a diminishing deductible that drops for each claim-free year.
Comprehensive
Everything that is not a collision: theft, fire, vandalism, glass, flood water and the deer that steps out on a parish road at dusk. In this part of the state, hail and falling limbs during a tropical system are comprehensive claims, not collision claims.
Medical Payments
Pays medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault, without waiting for liability to be established. Small limits, quick payment, and often the thing that keeps a minor injury from becoming a claim against somebody.
GAP Coverage
New vehicles depreciate faster than the loan amortises. If the car is totalled while you owe more than it is worth, GAP pays the difference between the settlement and the loan balance, which is otherwise money you owe on a car you no longer have.
Rideshare and Delivery Use
Driving for Uber or Lyft is commercial use, and a personal auto policy generally excludes it. There is also a real gap between app-on and passenger-in-car, which the platform’s own coverage handles differently at each stage. A rideshare endorsement closes it, and it is inexpensive.
Roadside, Rental and Forgiveness
Roadside assistance, rental reimbursement while your car is in the shop, and accident or minor-violation forgiveness, which stops a single at-fault claim or a speeding ticket from re-rating the whole policy at renewal.
Customized and Specialty Vehicles
Lift kits, wraps, sound systems and aftermarket wheels are not covered at their real value by a standard form. Custom equipment coverage schedules them. Classic and collector cars belong on an agreed-value policy instead; see the classic car section.
Mexican Auto Insurance
A US auto policy is not recognised as financial responsibility in Mexico. A separate Mexican policy is required to drive there legally, and we can write one for the trip.
Who This Coverage Is For
Auto is the policy almost everyone already has, which is exactly why it is the one least often re-read.
- Anyone still carrying the state minimum 15/30/25 limits
- Anyone who has signed a UM rejection form, knowingly or otherwise
- Households adding a teenage driver to the policy
- Drivers financing or leasing a vehicle, who should be looking at GAP
- Uber and Lyft drivers, and anyone doing app-based delivery
- Owners of lifted, wrapped or otherwise customized trucks
- Anyone with a home policy elsewhere, since bundling is usually the cheapest lever available
- Anyone whose liability limits were set before the vehicles on the road cost what they now cost
We write auto for drivers across Grand Coteau, Lafayette, Opelousas, Carencro, Sunset, Breaux Bridge, Scott, Youngsville and Broussard and the rest of St. Landry and Lafayette parishes. The I-49 corridor between Lafayette and Opelousas is a daily commute for a great many of our clients, and it is a road where the difference between minimum limits and real ones shows up.
Why an Independent Agency Matters Here
Auto rates in Louisiana are among the highest in the country, and the reasons are structural rather than personal: litigation costs, the uninsured driver rate, and the repair cost of modern vehicles full of sensors. No single carrier can price its way out of that, but carriers disagree sharply about which drivers they want.
One company will surcharge a young driver heavily and shrug at a comprehensive claim. Another does the opposite. A third gives back most of what it charges the moment the home policy moves across too. A captive agent can only tell you where their one company lands. We market the account, which on Louisiana auto is often a difference of hundreds of dollars for the same coverage.
We also do the unglamorous part: checking that the UM limit matches the liability limit, that the umbrella above it has the underlying limits it requires, and that the teenage driver who left for college is rated where they actually live.
How the Quote Process Works
Auto quotes are fast when the vehicle and driver details are to hand.
- The vehicles. Year, make, model and VIN for each, plus roughly how far each one is driven.
- The drivers. Everyone in the household with a licence, their dates of birth and their licence history.
- Use. Commute, pleasure, business, rideshare or delivery. This is the field people answer wrong most often.
- Current declarations. Especially the liability and UM limits, so we compare like for like rather than quoting down to a number.
- Lienholders. Anyone financing or leasing a vehicle, so GAP and the required physical damage limits are set correctly.
- Your X-date. When the policy renews.

Why Wagley for Auto Insurance
We start with two lines on your declarations page: the liability limit and the uninsured motorist limit. In Louisiana those two decide almost everything about how a bad day ends, and they are the two most often left at the floor because nobody explained them.
Then we look at what sits around the policy. The house, the boat, the teenage driver and the umbrella above all of it, because pricing them together is usually cheaper than pricing them apart.
- Liability quoted above the 15/30/25 state minimum, with the cost of each step shown
- Uninsured motorist checked on every review, and rejections revisited
- Rideshare and delivery use endorsed rather than quietly excluded
- GAP set correctly on financed and leased vehicles
- Auto and home marketed together, because that is where the discount lives
Talk to an Agent
We write auto for drivers across Grand Coteau, Lafayette, Opelousas, Carencro, Sunset, Breaux Bridge, Scott, Youngsville and Broussard and the rest of St. Landry and Lafayette parishes.
Most households quote the car and the house in the same conversation, so it is worth looking at home insurance at the same time, and at the umbrella that sits above both. Boats, ATVs, RVs and classic cars each have their own section on the personal insurance page.

Frequently Asked Questions
The questions we field most often, answered the way we would answer them on the phone. If yours is not here, call (337) 345-4410 and ask.
What is Louisiana’s minimum auto insurance requirement?
15/30/25: $15,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $30,000 per accident, and $25,000 of property damage liability. That is the legal minimum to register and drive a vehicle in the state. It is not a recommendation, and a single serious injury claim will exhaust it.
Should I carry uninsured motorist coverage?
In Louisiana, yes, in almost every case. UM pays your injuries when the at-fault driver has no coverage or not enough of it, and this state has one of the highest uninsured driver rates in the country. Declining it requires a signed rejection form. If you have one on file, ask us what adding it back would cost before you assume it is expensive.
Am I covered while driving for Uber, Lyft or a delivery app?
Not by default. A personal auto policy generally excludes livery and commercial use. The platform provides some coverage, but it changes between having the app on, being matched with a passenger, and carrying one, and the gaps sit exactly where you would not want them. A rideshare endorsement closes them and costs little.
Do I need GAP insurance?
If you owe more on the vehicle than it is currently worth, yes. New vehicles depreciate faster than a loan pays down, so a total loss in the first couple of years can leave you owing thousands on a car you no longer have. GAP pays that difference.
Will one at-fault accident put my rates up?
Usually, though several carriers offer accident forgiveness or minor-violation forgiveness that protects the first one. Which carrier you are with matters a great deal here: companies price the same claim very differently. That is the case for having the account marketed rather than renewed on autopilot.
Is comprehensive worth keeping on an older car?
Often, yes. Comprehensive is the cheap half of physical damage and it is what answers for hail, a falling limb during a tropical system, theft, glass and hitting a deer, all of which are common here. We will show you the premium against the vehicle’s actual value so the decision is an arithmetic one.
